Public vs Digital

Public vs. Digital

DID YOU KNOW??

Despite the recent increase in personal technology usage, such as tablets, and smart phones, printed books are still more popular than digital books.

  • 69% of Americans read a printed book last year
  • However, those who read an e-book increased from 17% to 28%
Take a look for yourself:

50% of adults use an e-reader. Nonetheless, majority of Americans prefer to use a public library. These reasons include:
  • Access printers and the internet
  • Youth programs
  • Job search assistance
  • Librarians ( personal hep)
  • Research resources
These are just a few of the factors that differentiate public libraries from digital libraries. But digital libraries have a few positives as well, including:

  • 24 hour access
  • Ease of access
  • Easy retrieval

Personally, I prefer printed books over digital. They are easier on the eyes and just feel more authentic. To add to this, I love the quiet and stillness of a library.

Let us know which you guys prefer below!!

  1. I love to read! I think I will always prefer physical books. I have started reading more eBooks recently simply because I don't feel like driving to the library to get physical books and then having to drive back to return them. eBooks are also more convenient and portable as long as they are stored on the device and don't require an Internet connection.

  2. Agreed. The smell of an open book in the afternoon sunlight or late in bed is priceless. But sometimes, the convenience of having access to millions of books on a device thinner than most books is very convenient.

  3. I love the convenience of digital and think it should be implemented everywhere and will continue to grow. However, I will always have memories from my library as a kid, and would love for my kids to have the same. The library promotes learning and socializing, while digital books take away from the social part of libraries. The combination of both is perfect.

  4. I prefer digital books however I do feel that a library is very important to a city. it does offer many services that some people will not have access too other wise such as a computer and high speed internet

  5. I have a preference for printed books and actually turning pages, but I'm trying to be swayed into digital books because they are more sustainable.

  7. When it comes to academics i prefer printed over digital, only because i can highlight and bookmark the specific examples that i need to know. When it comes to leisure reading i prefer digital because they are much cheaper and much easier to hold when I am laying in bed.

  9. I have mixed feelings. I believe that kids learn better from e-readers, but once they hit the third grade they shouldn't be using tablets, iPads and e-readers to read chapter books like Harry Potter

  10. Personally physical books is more effective when it comes to studying for me. Yea, digital books are more convenient and portable but what happens when your device dies, or gets a virus or something like that. In my opinion you just cant beat the "old-fashioned" way of studying.
